CANCELED: Artists on Artists: Alex Olson on With Pleasure

MOCA has taken specific measures to keep our visitors and staff healthy and safe. We have been monitoring coronavirus (COVID-19) closely and in line with suggestions from The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, we have decided to cancel Artists on Artists: Alex Olson on With Pleasure in an effort to help with containment. There is no immediate threat or cause for concern at MOCA, but we feel taking these measures are in the best interest of our broader Los Angeles community. MOCA Grand Avenue galleries and WAREHOUSE at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA are currently temporarily closed. Please continue to check our website for any additional updates.

Alex Olson juxtaposes patterns, shapes, colors, and textures to create abstract paintings of symbols and linguistic figures. Playing with qualities both graphic and visceral, her paintings construct a series of marks into almost legible works, prompting in the viewer a desire to understand and investigate. Olson’s textured canvases are characterized by the layering and scraping away of paint using both traditional and nontraditional methods. Her work has appeared in, among other exhibitions, the Hammer Museum’s first biennial of Los Angeles–based artists, Made in L.A. 2012. Join Olson in exploring the Pattern and Decoration movement and MOCA’s exhibition With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985 in tandem with her process.
